    Wehrmacht Goggles?

    Hi all,

Not looking for a value,- just an ID on these goggles, just in case I made a score..
Came from Poland, sold as German,- gut feeling is there post-war allied of some description? or post war commercial,- but I still like the look when they're sitting on a German lid.
Buckle adjusters on elastic are almost soft plastic, the pebbled 'leather' is more of an artificial 'canvis-leather'.

    Anybody help here?

    Thanks,
    C.

They look like WW2 Russian tanker goggles, except the ones I am familiar with simply tie in back of the head.

        Thanks for speedy reply Gene.
        Hadn't considered Russian, interesting.

Would any close-up shots assist with this possibility? the elastic looks machine stitched at the lense, but where the buckles are, it has been hand stitched, with a dark grey thread.

Just having a good sniff of them and there is a rubberly smell, which must be from the 'canvas-leather'.

        Thanks,

Pics won't help me any; I have a pair of WW2 Russian tanker goggles and they have the same glass setup. Like I said they tie off in the back and if I recall correctly there are grommets top and bottom. I also seem to remember a pair advertised as WW2 Japanese too, but that most likely was on ebay.

Hi Colin, are they the same as these? See here:

            Cheers, Ade.

              Thanks guys.

Cheers for that link Ade, - I've had a good look and they look pretty much the same to me, I think mine look slightly different around the 'extra-edge'/reinforced exterior.(can't find the right word at the moment).
The elastic on mine is completely one colour but still looks like a similar set-up to those in the link, although the stitching on the ones in the link looks better done at the buckles.
One of the lenses in mine is very ill-fitting, and the glass has speckles of what looks like blue paint on them. The glass is 2mm thick.

It would be great if mine were authentic,(I may have to buy a pair of repros now for comparison!), but I did get them on e-bay which does make me wonder if they are repros faked up, but there was no money in it for the seller because the consolation for me is even with the postage costs, these goggles were still cheaper than those repros listed, and do look nice sitting on a M42.

              Thanks again,

              Colin,

The buckles are like black plastic.I notice the ones visible on the link look silver.Just an observation.

Batteries ran out, hence the date on previous pic.

The top of this lense is slightly chipped at the corner where the metal has caught it wrong.

                      Goggles

Interesting, as your goggles seem to have good age and use. However, the give-away on the postwar goggles seems to be the vent slots stamped into the metal frames. Wartime examples were typically vented via grommets in the synthetic leather portions and lacked the slotted frames.

Note the wartime photos on the OstFront site related to this item. Neither pair shown has vented frames. I would say your pair is either postwar Soviet or Polish.

The unused postwar goggles as offered by Ostfront for what they really are, are often seen being sold as original WW2 tanker goggles.

Original WW2 goggles can be found that both tie in the back and have a full slide buckle set up. My experience is that the simple tie is the most common.

A nice observation Mike that is a handy pointer to period production ID, - I looked for ages and never noticed the lack of split vents on the period photo till after you mentioned it.

Excellent to have found out what they were so quickly,- again my thanks to you all gents

                        Merry Christmas
