Part of a german cannon , with a level?

I know this is not a piece of equipment, but there is no forum for this.

Who can identify this object for me?

I've heard that it's a part of a cannon. Perhaps to position the cannon.

You can see very clearly that there's a "level"on it.

I have no better photo's . The one I have is in a much worser condition, so I have only this one to show. I hope some expert can help me!
