Its possible that its pre-war or even early post-war production for camping or hunting, I have several late 1930scatalogs that have this type of canteen pictured in their hunting/ camping sections.... The first catalog I could find calls this a tourist canteen...for outdoors tourism, hiking, etc.... see pic below.
It is inevitable that every one of these canteens will be sold as HJ as they are probably even made by the same manufacturer and are probably the identical pattern...I think the engraved ring around the center outside of the cap is a good way to spot these (this particular feature appears on all the canteens in the catalog that I have, again see the picture..) This particular catalog that the scan is from is dated 1931...
Hope that solves the mystery!

Harry - I agree with the good research above. I actually saw this type of canteen with regularity in Germany when I living there. They are routinely passed off as military, SA or HJ.
Similarly, camping packs, lanterns, stoves and flashlights are passed off as German wartime issue.
Any of them could have found there way into 3rd Reich use, but like all those E-tools you see, how do you know? Not textbook.Alitur vitium vivitque tegendo
