Gas mask cannister...help!

After being Sick of looking wierd at reenactments,

I finally pulled the hessian off my gas mask cannister...it was sold to me as a D.A.K. or mediterranean Cannister but I seriously have my doubts I think its more bundeswehr...Anyone know what this is? More clues...scroll down....!

Cleaned up abit...looks like wartime production to me but restamped with "the new owner's mark"

Its definately Bundeswehr, Jeff. The padding/canvas is factory. I have seen a few of these around and they are not wartime manufacture. The can is near identical to the wartime can, perfect for reenactment if you strip em good. Saves dinging up a good 'un!

Definitely repro, we use it to shoot vehicles with. We load up a coke bottle or two with oxy-aceytelyne paint them black, put fins on the back with a fuse then pop them into the 'shrek connect the + & - , pull the trigger and blam!

To see if it is a postwar one one of the best things is to have a look at the spring catch.If it has flat sides as yours, it is a clue to say it is postwar.

You should not have removed that canvas clothing If you need a can for WW2 reenacting you could have found genuine German WW2 cans here and there. The can you just ruined by ripping the cloth away is more rare than the genuine WW2 cans and is highly collectible for gasmask collectors.

The guy I got this from could not sell this to save his life...2 shows in a row I saw this can and no one touched it. It was cheap as...30 pounds I think I picked it up for. How much would it have been worth?

You can buy empty genuine German WW2 cans (no gasmask in the can) for that price here in Norway. The one that is now ruined is (was) an early Bundeswehr and i would have left it alone. That is my opinion. Others might think different.

Well, this is the first time anyone has been interested in it in 3 years other than a guy who wanted to trade (norweigian too!) for a genuine WW2 one but never followed through...

Ah well, its worth something to me now... ruined is a subjective word in this case, I think it looks terrific

Hi guys

I have to disagree about the latch.. I have a couple of (late war) masks which also have the flat sides... one latch is marked frn 43 and the other frn 44, so I guess the latch was changed somewhere during 43.

anymore opinions on this ?
