Hi,
In the past I have asked the question - why are there no HRE44 "Kokosnuss" canteens?
Does this idea make sense? I have a 45-dated HRE canteen with HRE45 marked neck strap on the harness and red-painted cup and furniture. I also have two 43-dated canteens with the small silver HRE45-stamped cups and HRE45 marked harness.
A well known dealer a few months ago had in his list a couple of HRE43 canteens with the red-painted cup but with the neck strap stamped HRE44. Unfortunately I opened their list too late to get the canteen with the nicer cup.
My theory, prompted by the appearance of these with the 44-dated harness, is that HRE made so many canteen bodies in 1943 that they had sufficient surplus to use through 1944 into 1945 when they started making a new batch stamped HRE45.
How's this for an idea?
Regards,
Grossfuss
