    Mistery strap - for Steiner

    Hi,

    I'm posting this strap for fellow forum member Steiner.

            Seems like in a previous life they were indeed carrying straps for the MG, but have been customized for a certain and probably long forgotten purpose ...

              Tie Down strap

              They use them on horses.Keeps the horse from flopping his head around.It comes from the cinch between the horse front legs up to his lower headstall.

                Well Elliott that's just what I thougt. I had the feeling (just a militaria sixth sence) it would had something to do with horsegear. It was attached to a gasmaskcannister as a replacement strap.

                  Sorry to correct you on this one. As can be seen in this picture taken from H.Dv. 476/2 Das algemeine Heergeraet, volume 2, Pferde und Tragtierausruestung the used strap looks quite different.



                  The single hook on the strap is the type used on MG carrying straps, the two other hooks were used on y-straps and backpacks. These hooks were not used on (standard) horse equipment.

                    Bart,

                    The illustration you show does not appear to be a tie-down, but what we call in english a breastcollar. It keeps the saddle from sliding backwards. A translation of the text would probably confirm or refute this.
                    However, I think that you are correct that the object in question is some sort of field modified strap for some unknown purpose. The Y-strap hooks would certainly be impractical if used as a tie-down.
