Is it WH? HJ? It is marked: HRE 40

I have a few of these, it's great that you found one dated 1940, I have one dated 1939. So from the dates alone looks like early war, would love to find more marked examples and see how late these were made.

The otherone,more regular, have not any marks wich i could see, but maby under the paint! I am sure this one also is german period ww2.
I also have one "small" painted black, maby an ss?

big mess tins are also made in steel.. in late war etc.. they were produced for political/paralilitary formations
