It certainly could have been polished, (and very possibly during the third reich period), as SS men sometimes cleaned their visors and polished the insignia to make them shine. This would have been more common during the prewar years and these "RZM 52" skulls marked down on the jaw like this were the third known Deschler SS skull variation. These were probably made around early/mid 1935.
Anyway, IMO, light cleaning does not detract from it's appeal and a few of my pieces have been polished at some point in time.
By the way, here is my mint example for comparison: (Note the different style/positioning of the "RZM" and the "52" below it, compared to the other one). The marking style that is seen on the one that started this thread is seldom found.
