    RODO SS Buckle

    Hi guys,
Just wanted to share a recent addition to my collection. I believe it to be an honest worn RODO, but as usual I would greatly appreciate your opinions.
    Thanks in advance.

          Thank you Chris.
I was relatively confident that all the hallmarks of an original RODO were there, so as always it's great to hear others agree.

Could you maybe help in answering a couple of questions I have about these SS buckles if possible?
I'm guessing that with the paint being a green shade, this would have been worn by a combat participant, which leads me to think this could have been specifically worn by a member of the Waffen-SS, potentially operating on one of the fronts. Would this most likely have been the case?
Also, is there any way I could acertain when this buckle would have been manufactured, maybe the year or at least if it's early/late war?

I really appreciate the help. Any answers or suggestions for research would be great too.

          Thanks

All types of ss buckles were worn by wss unit; silver painted mostky and rather rare green one. The year of production would be 1943/44 IMO.

I believe that these are definately combat buckles and were certainly used by the Waffen SS, maybe exclusively, (not sure about the SS-VT though).

Also, I'm not sure about the exact year that these were introduced, but I think that it would have been between 1943 and 1945. Since these, (and the JFS marked buckles), were only produced in steel and are not RZM related, these were likely to have been late war introduced buckles, imo. Maybe others can offer more information on this.

                Thanks guys.
Indeed I've seen Waffen-SS buckles in a variety of colours as you say, but with the green colour, I would imagine this would be exclusively issued to combatants in the Waffen-SS, as other SS branches had a different colour uniform and dress code, hence they would not have worn the green buckle... I would imagine it would have looked improper.
                Please could anyone confirm this?

Also, is it true RODO is the only company who exclusively (or predominantly) used the green colour scheme on all its SS buckles, as opposed to others that produced different colour variants?

RODO SS buckles are the only ones that were finished green for the majority, (more often than silver or gray overall). I also believe that all RODO SS buckles were originally painted either green or blue, (most were green), as I have never seen a RODO with silver or gray finish.

RODO was not only maker who was making buckles in green. Also Assmann made them in green and, if remember correctly, also JFS made them in green.

And as wrote before ; the green one are rare and were rarely worn by any wss units ( it is extremely hard to find them in use on period photos ).

Mostly front line units of wss used aluminium wss buckles or steel silver painted buckles ( and silver painted are dominant buckles ). Probably some units/soldiers used as well nickle silver buckles ( officers/NCO ).

The ASS units mostly used nickel silver buckles.

                      Hi,

i will suggest to post SS buckles in the "Belts & Buckles" subforum, in which more specialists will be able to reply to any question.

                        Thanks for the input guys.
I will post in the belts and buckles forum and see what happens. Interesting how period photos are hard to find of WSS wearing green buckles. It's certainly something I will be looking more into.

Just thought I should post this image. The buckle shown on the man in the center appears to be similar in tone to his camouflage outfit.
I dont think this is silver (the grenade was colored green, which serves as a good comparison) so more likely this is a feldgrau coloured buckle as it seems to blend with the uniform nicely.

Here's my buckle in a more natural light with its feldgrau colour apparent.
