The sleeve eagle has been dyed dark blue. I have seen instances where tunics were dyed this color for POWs in ETO. (This is not an explanation for this color, just a side note.) Even though the sleeve eagle exhibits very unusual color, I like the quality embroidery of the sleeve eagle and believe it to be original. The Edelweis arm badge is nice original cloth too..
The last eagle is not dyed. The thread is originally grey but they made this pattern with a few different color threads. I have seen this grey version on peadot jackets. I agree about the original bird is an early original.
You bet and there have been some great eagles popping up this week! I just love all the variations in these eagles and always looking for those oddities. Here is a good picture to show the difference in color of the last early war eagle posted with the grey thread. There are three thread colors but there is a fourth that I don't have that is a silky white looking thread.
I have a similar, although not as dark, I've never heard a convincing explanation as to why...
I think the tunic was washed.
I once had a TK tab, rank tab and eagle all the same color; the tabs were still
wrinkled. The provider said he got them from a vet whose wife washed the tunic.
