    Honor Ring Opinion

    This is currently on ESTAND but would like to hear what others think about it. To me, something doesn't look quite right, eyes, lack of visible joiner line, faint engraving as stated by seller. Thanks

    As I am the one offering this I thought I would comment here as well. I was initially concerned not seeing the seam line too, but given the extremely large size of this one, my thought was that this is as big as they came, and all the rest were sized down from this. (not wanting to get into the rolled/cast argument, but I think these were all cast) There are some remnants of the engraving, but it is really hard to see. This ring has been worn a lot. but I did a side by side with the other two I own and I am convinced that this one is also real.



    This walked into the shop with the son of the US veteran along with some other things. The son did not place a lot of value on the ring, and was shocked by my offer for it. That in itself does not make it real, but for me it did add to the credibility of the piece.


    The pics I posted were taken with a new macro lens, so here are some with my regular phone camera. I will try and better show the remains light engraving later on.


    Those who know me know I don't sell junk, so if there is question on this one I will certainly remove it. But I also would question some one to show a similar sized example to compare. This one is massive.

      There’s been some big ones out there- sizes 13, 14 or more I believe. I know Don Boyle had a huge one, Andy has had at least one very large one, and if I recall the late John Pepera also had a 13/14 ring. So I don’t think size has much to do with the seam.

        I really don’t have any doubt about the ring but to me it is odd that the entire inscription has been worn off. Maybe it was removed and that has something to do with the lack of a visual seem.

            Not a comment on authenticity -

            Engraving probably taken out postwar as many were..

            As far as the seam. IF its a real one then its there. They can sometimes be very hard to see on the early patterns for some reason [usually because they matched the solder very well]...

            I think I see a trace of the seam. Slightly to the left of the center of the skull..

              I think can see the shadow of a date 30-6-34
              really hard to photo.


              Can they do an acid thing on these like police can do on gun serial numbers?

                    I think I see it and as Gaspare pointed out, I believe to the left of the tarnish spot is the joint line. I agree that photographing these pieces are very difficult!
                    As far as any acid treatment, I would not advise that. I believe you would ruin the ring and certainly jeopardize the integrity.
                    Right now it is what it is, a worn ring and should be left alone.

                      I see it too Jerry. As G pointed out, this happened to rings sometimes postwar, lots of reasons to get rid of a name for sure. I see a faint seam too, in the first set of pics.

                        When people lost weight in the war the ring would lose his inscription faster from turning on the finger.
                        I have seen a couple in the family still that have the same.

                            This is a good sign. 2 pc construction- It looks like the skull is separate and soldered on, and hand done, as it’s not perfectly centered upon (the faint) join seam.

                              You could try to use a chalk to get those inscriptions invisible... just my 2 cents
