It's a bit hard to tell, I'd say six but the strands kind of intertwines.

Maybe it's cotton? I've heard/read so many versions of what the material is. Cello, cellon, celleon, cotton and rayon.

*I think Cello would refer to it being a cellulose fiber thread. But it's a very brittle material. Some medal bands were made of this (swedish participation medal for the finnish civil war comes to mind) and most of them is falling to pieces.

*Celleon and Cellon is obviously not right as this is Cellophane wrapped thread.

*Cotton, maybe very fine spun, but should be very prone to damage as it's not braided?

*Rayon, semisynthetic cellulose fibers. Also known as artificial silk. I'd go with this one.
