I have never collected rank insignia and have a relatively minimal knowledge about them. I would appreciate thoughts on this item. It came from a veteran’s patch blanket (along with a Luftwaffe eagle I will post in a couple of minutes) so i’m fairly sure both are original. I think this is SS based on a similar example in Beaver’s excellent book but would appreciate any input. Thanks in advance for any help:

Wehl is correct. There really is no way to tell.
But I believe there were more Waffen SS Rottenfuhrers than army Obergefreiters who were authorized to wear a black wrapper. Also IMHO, the WSS was somewhat more likely to wear aluminum tresse than subdued / gray tresse. So, again IMHO, it is more likely an SS chevron (maybe a 60 / 40% chance?).
Just my opinion, no proof.
