    Cardboard in Shoulderboards?

    Hi there,

I have these shoulderboards laying around for sometime. Today I had a look and saw some cardboard inside.

I think it is post war, but thats only an assumption since I have no clue if this is period correct.

Please your opions/knowledge on these before I take something good apart [emoji51]

    Thanks,
    HJ

According to pg 13 of John Angolias Cloth Insignia of the SS, there is a diagram of the process followed by the caption, first a cardboard underlay is covered with a base cloth and the Waffenfarbe is added. The top is then sewn on and finally the tresse if it is an nco braid.

The example diagram only shows an NCO shoulder board but it implies all of them. Hope this helps. They could still manufacture them this way post war but I dont know.

This is a Heere Pioneer board for it lacks waffenfarbe as a third layer.
Yes, originals do have a cardboard template and usually a metal stiffener,
for this type of rank board.
This one looks to be a post war put together by the way it is constructed.

The cardboard usually laquered to make it waterproof. This is what the inside looks like.
