Period photos with Hitlerjugend cuff title

Gents Im looking to accumulate some late war photos of members of the 12th SS division wearing their cuff titles. Browsing the forum, Ive seen some scans of photos where people have drawn over them to protect their value, and thats fine too, just hoping people will share what they have.

All Ive got are these three.

Some time ago, I recall one of our WAF members here post a copy of a fieldpost letter in which a young soldier of the 12. SS-"HJ" was asking his mom to buy all the cufftitles she could get and send them to him at the front for him and his buddies.

Hence I still don't know whether these were awarded or could simply be bought.

I honeslty have not dedicated time to this question, but in a way I believe these were 'awarded' on some offical occation, but were still obtained by the soldiers through other channels.

Anyway, nice to see a thread dedicated to this cufftitle and contemporary photos showing it in wear.

          Hi,

a few pictures with locally made and totally unofficial cufftitles exist, the letter was from early 1944.

Two unofficial and unauthorized cufftitles, probably before the official cufftitle was ever produced/awarded in fall 1944.

          See You

Thanks everyone. I did see the thread with the letters home asking mom to purchase more cuffs for him and his crew. It would be awesome to get some definite clarification on the regulations regarding how they were earned/given/purchased/made.

One last question, does anyone know of any related books that have any further photos that may not be easily found online?

                  Hi,

HJ official cufftitles were given during small ceremonies (with a small paper "award") to selected sub-units of the division in fall 1944 (after the Normandy campaign).
For other "late war" units, some official orders exist to confirm that sub-units of division "X" is cleared to wear the cufftitle "X".
Many late war SS divisions had only very partial permission to wear their planned cufftitles, if not no permission at all. Some cufftitles were produced, but never officially awarded, others were only partially awarded as previously stated.
This is why tonns of SS cufftitles were found in Dachau stocks, some models very partially awarded to a few sub-units (not the whole divisions).

Unofficial cufftitles/homemade insignia are not new, and are usually done for "studio pictures" (sometimes with family) before the soldier is sent to the front/war.

Unofficial awards/insignia were of course highly forbidden, even more in the Germany army.

                  See You

                    Hi,

close-ups of the two "Hitlerjugend" homemade, unofficial (and at the time more probably unauthorized) cufftiles.

Be more precise, many SS-Kav units existed. You mean probably "Florian Geyer" ?

The cufftitle was officially awarded in Spring 1944, but some officers had private/homemade cufftitles, and as per Gordon Williamson book the "SS Kavallerie Division" cufftitle is an unofficial model that is unrelated to the unit and made in Czech Republic. Don't know what Gordon wanted to say exactly by that.

                              12th SS Soldbuch Bussmann grouping

"One of my favorite parts of this grouping is the letter where Bussmann writes home to his parents specifically asking his mother to purchase him a black cap and as many ("HJ") Cufftitles as possible....great stuff indeed......note also his mother obviously must have been a little taken back at the skull on the front of his cap !!! "

That letter is dated "12.II.44" and reads as follows:

"Now I have another favour to ask you. I urgently need a black field cap, about size 57/58. Should you just get a NSKK-cap, that's O.K. too. Only there should be no buttons in the front. Well, Mom, I am sure you remember the cap that I had when I was on leave. That's the one it should be.

Also could you please take a look around if you could find sleeve bands. Get as many as possible; if it is a dozen, that's fine. Just write me what they cost so I can collect the money from the comrades. It appears that the only place where these sleeve bands are still available is Braunschweig. Several comrades tried in vain during their leave to get some.
