Patrick, it looks like someone fashioned a tunic out of used original wool, which sadly happens fairly often. For me, these stand out as indicators of a replica tunic:

    - an attempt was made to mimic a factory produced piece instead of a tailor made item. This was a mistake: pocket flap dimensions, pocket details, lack of collar backing, buttonholes, and lack of body features (darts) mark this as a non-factory item. The lack of collar backing and buttonholes are particularly damning.

    - material used throughout the liner - all the same - is not what I'd expect on an M42. Rayon/artificial silk in at least some places is typical.

    - the eagle is one of the very late Dachau-types; not something I'd expect on a 41-early 43 tunic. RZM is fine, but this is one of those late felty ones sewn on oddly. I like a good spread zig-zag or straight-line for a real late one, not this bunchy stitching.

    - the creators tried to capture some SS liner details as have been published here and elsewhere, but mixed some with standard WH.

    - some tells that just jump out at you: moth tracking other shade differences that end at newly created seams, lack of material settling - it just looks like it was stitched last week from a large remnant / garment.

I'd love this to be real, but I don't believe it is.

Having said that, it is far from the worst fake I've seen - someone put some time and original insignia into it's creation. It is not a bad filler.

The button hole keys aren't like period construction either. Original tunics don't tapper to a point the way these do on this tunic.

Thanks for the detailed response guys, much appreciated. I don’t usually deal with tunics so that has been really helpful.

It is a very good fake and take at that. Many of the features that are decried here are possible find on originals.
