how did Hausser loose his eye?

Dear Sirs.

I was hoping, that some of you knew exactly how Paul Hausser lost his eye at Borodino in oct. 1941. Was his command post attacked?

I believe it was a shrapnel wound from artillery fire. He lost a large chunk of his face, not just the eye. The SS surgeons patched him up quite well, but in photos of him without his eye patch, it is clear the damage was quite devastating.
