I have had this board for a while. It is made of a dark (black) recycled wool and has subdued tress. It has had the tongue removed. The button hole is a perfect keyhole type. The reverse is the common recycled wool that is seen on many SS and Luft boards. The piping is wool and is a brown color similar to luft signals or heer bau. The board is definitely period. Would this be SS KZ? or possiblely something else? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi G, it's really hard to tell the true color of the piping from your pic's. It could be brown.
As for the backing, I believe late war boards, mid'44-45, were made out of what ever they could get there hands on. Beaver does a pretty good job explaining that in his book on SS tunics, and in fact, discusses the amount of the addition of rayon into the wool tunics themselves.
I also have found that on late war ss boards there seems to be more dull tress then bright. Sonny

Thanks, sonny and sayle for your responses. Mgn I have many boards with that same backing, that so that is not what really concerns me. But I can understand someones reluctance with that backing if you have not seen it before...
I am more wondering about the piping color. anyone else have a KZ board (em/nco) they could show? I believe the board is original ss - just want to make sure it is KZ not something else. Have not handled an original or seen the piping color firsthand to confirm what I may or may not have...
Thanks

Hi,
Have about 9 KZ boards of various ranks from SS-Mann to SS- Haupsturmfuhrer, all with varying shades of brown wool/silk piping. Will not be back at home for approx 2 weeks but will attempt to post them on my return.
