It looks to me that you can see to the left and right back of the TK
where there are yellowish 'peck marks' where a soutache might have been??
They almost look like moth nips.

Insignia look original. I see nothing wrong with the cap itself. It even has the false piping that some insist must be there for a WSS cap.

I think Tex is right. This cap once had a cavalry soutache. Or did it? Coastal Artillery caps also have a golden yellow soutache. Because of the way the soutache seems to have been applied, it was undoubtedly factory done.

This is one of the larger pattern skulls. The inverted "V" of soutache must be wide enough so the top point fits between the skull and the edge of the turned up flap cap without crossing the skull, or there should be some sign of the soutache crossing the skull. The pictures are not detailed enough to really see how these things fit together, or if there are sewing holes on the skull or wear in the area where the soutache passed over the skull. Coastal artillery and army caps with factory applied soutaches tend to have narrower V's. The narrower width of the V at the bottom is set by the angle of the cocade being 90 degrees.

I think we must consider the possibility this is a CA cap (of SS pattern) that has had SS insignia applied sometime between 1939 and 2017. Yes, it could be a wartime conversion, but virtually impossible to prove.

Sorry for rambling, and I hope my fears are unfounded.
