SS? Gabardine M43 Field Cap bears resemblance to known Italian copies. Totenkompf?

Purchased this from an old dealer's stock recently. I don't doubt that it is an authentic WWII M43. The gabardine material seems unusual in my limited experience. I also notice that there are several known copies of SS Italian gabardine M43's. There is a notable four prong outline where some type of insignia was mounted. Possibly a Deaths Head?

Thanks in advance for your opinions...

        Postwar cap IMHO.

This is the trikot wool, not gabardine. It is very different than italian gabardine. This material was used very commonly on visors and tunics, but less so for M43s (although you do see it a bit). It was, however, used very commonly on postwar west german caps, and the sweatshield inside is something you barely ever see on authentic M43s.

So, postwar West German cap for me.

Early post war Austrian. Most likely Bundes Gendarmerie. They had this dark color wool and golden buttons on their caps
          and uniforms.
The round ghost imprint is an Austrian cap cockade. Post war sweat shield removed from liner to hide its Austrian origin.
