SS sleeve eagle - camo cut off

I posted this in the spoils of war thread over on USMF and thought some of you guys might also like to see it.

W.D Todd served first as an airman then, later, in the 28th Division. During his time in the ETO he kept a scrapbook of his photos and exploits, including a day trip to Berchtesgaden in October 1945.

There, he surveyed the wrecked homes of Hitler, Goering and Bormann ("...they were placed so that Goering and Bormann could keep an eye on Hitler...and each other.").

Don't know how much info you have on him but with his air corps holster is it possible he was an artillery observation plane pilot for the 28th division ?? It's stupefying that nazi uniforms where lying about to cut off insignia a full 5 months after the wars end at such a frequented location..

Billbert, this stuff was piled high all over the place, even when this guy arrived in October.

True – probably all the silverware and SS daggers were long gone but camo jackets - prized as they are now - were still 'just' army jackets back then.

I mean heck, if they were that coveted why not bring the whole jacket back?

My uncles unit the 110th AAA battalion served as guards at an SS POW camp after the war ended. The same camp that held Peiper and other ranking members of the LAH before their trial. Unfortunately the uniforms were stripped already.

I love this cut off insignia with proof behind it , it has more history than some of the high end items without provenance.
