Assortment of SS collar tabs for review

    Hi All

here are some SS collar tabs for review. They're in an auction and supposedly well provenanced, but I'd be interested in your opinions.

    15th Waffen Grenadier officer...

    20th Waffen Grenadier Officer...

    Marie Theresia Officer...

    Waffen SS Hauptsturmfuhrer...

    Early Totenkopf...

    SS General

(given the scarcity of these, I think they must be questionable at best.)

And what sort of values do they have?

    thanks in advance

    Adrian

They are all terrible fakes, the Latvian right collarpatch is a pure fantasy that never existed, and they all are just bad in every way possible. They are not even well made.

    Keep your money.

        Thanks for your advice.
How can I avoid buying fakes though?
How can I learn to tell a fake from an original?
Is there a guide on this website?

        Thanks again

I have collected militaria for 40 years and have spent the last 4-5 years, studying, in earnest, SS insignia.

When the "Real Deal" insignia pops up, carefully examining the photos, the stitching, the size, shape and position of the embroidery. Look at the backing material, the pips - as they evolved slightly through the war.

I'm happy to say that as soon as I saw these, I knew they were all poorly made reproductions.

It takes time and money. NEVER be afraid to spend a LOT for the best. When in hand, scrutinize EVERYTHING about it. Over time, the differences will pop out. There is no easy way to learn, as the fakes keep getting better.

Buy the item and never the story.

          Hope that helps!

          TK

Start, again, START with buying litterature on the specific field you are interested in buying.

Read, read, read, and read again

Ask questions here on the forum, people are more than willing to assist (like you did now)

Telling a fake from an original comes from all of the above.

If, IF these should have been original (except for the pure fantasies) and you shold have paid market prize from them you would have to have parted from thousands and thousends of $/€

The market value now for all of these might be about 20$, maybe 25$ if you are generous

Edit: Also what Tom Kibler said

              Where To Find...

Use the Search feature at the top and the links to Threads of Interest & Importance and Original Foreign volunteer/Dachau Type Collar Patches at the beginning of this forum. If you have a question on a piece of insignia, post it as you have done. Also learn what makes original insignia unique. Buy some reference books and visit cloth SS militaria sites to study. Be prepared to spend lots of time in study for this hobby but most important, use this forum. Answers to your questions may be harsh but they will save you money and lots of it. Good luck.

The SS-Obergruppenfuhrer tabs may warrant much better photos but the rest are junk as the guys say. I cannot comment on the Heer Panzer-Pionier piped skull tabs

Unfortunately, ALL of the tabs are bad.

I agree with all of the advise given, but will add a comment or 2.

Accept the fact that you WILL make mistakes. Do your best to guard against it (return privileges, second opinions, WAF reviews, etc.) but it will happen. It's just part of the learning process.

The importance of a good reference library (books and electronic) cannot be overstated.

                    As agreed . . .

You research research and research . . .
Once you have do that you do it all again. You are going to have to spend hours upon hours counting stitches / comparing as already mentioned.
As Charles rightly points out use the search facility too. But don't be frightened to ask !
