Dutch Freiwillige with TK on heer tunic!

    Gents,

This very interesting picture is from a friend of mine who is related to the soldier in question. The guy shown is a Dutchman who was born in 1920. He volunteerd to go work in Germany in 1941 and was working there as a train driver. He wrote home that he volunteered for the Waffen SS in 1943. His parents were surprised as his family was not pro German or politically active and neither was he. He was attached to the Westland regiment. He continued to write home until early january 1945 and is missing ever since. He was reportedly last seen by a Dutch member of Westland in september 1944 in the fortress of Warschau. The picture shown was taken in december 1944.

I had the opportunity to see the Red Cross file drafted after the war when his family was trying to find out what happend to him. Most of the above information comes from this file. The file concludes that he probably had been killed around Budapest between January 10 and March 10, 1945. There is no mentioning him having been part of the Totenkopf division.

As you can see the uniform combi is very interesting! You would say that with an eventual transfer from Westland to TK he would only had to change his collar tabs
on his SS uniform but it seems he got a WH uniform (and M43 cap!) and added the collar tabs and skull to his cap. Likely there were no SS uniforms available at that time.

I am interested in your comments.

Can't add anything but a very interesting and somber story.

Dear Regen, I will send you a PM. For reasons of privacy I cannot post the documents here or I have to edit them all. Allmost all documents are in Dutch.

I checked them again and found his fieldpost numbers. His fieldpostnumber on 6-4-1944 was 28109 F. His fieldpostnumber in January 1945 was 30377 A (possibly anti aircraft arty?)

              Fieldpost-number 30377 A = Stabkp./Pz.Gr.Rgt.10

This means he was stil in the Westland regiment when he went missing in January 1945. But strangely a few weeks before he went missing he wore the uniform as pictured with the TK tab...

Wow, very intriguing photo and units he served in. Too bad family never knew what happened to him. Thanks for posting. There were definitely some bizarre uniform insignia combinations. But really did happen.

                  Excellent and very intriguing photo!!

One can only guess I asume why he wears a TK collar tab; SS replacements to other Divisions most often just continued to wear their old insignia. It is very unlikely that so late in the war he would have changed to a TK tab even if he was transferred to "Totenkopf".

Anyhow, I know of at least one other Dutch volunteer, never to have served in TK division (but In "Landstorm") also wore a TK collar tab.

I think this man is born in 1919 (Den Haag) and not in 1920.

A glimpse at his files in the Dutch National Archives might help to find the answer how and when he was attached to a Totenkopf unit.

                    Best wishes Bram
