    Odd Norwegian Volunteer Shield

This came with some really nice original material, but I did not get it direct from the family. The shield is made of all proper material, but is slightly smaller and much more crudely embroidered. Are there any variants of this shield that are original, other than the standard Dachau found types and the flag shaped shield?

I have looked over several of the sites of reproduction sellers, vut could not find and example that matched. I appreciate any information.

      Hi,

interesting, Bob was it from a vet family from Norway or from the US (GI who bring back it) ?

Also did you tested the patch with an UV light ?

The fact is that your model is very very similar to the Dachau type, so i don't think it can be an Allied or resistance model ?

          Hello Vince,

There is no reaction under UV light.

It came second hand from the US veteran's family. I cannot offer proof, only the word of a friend I trust.

It may be just a locally produced variant or some post war copy that got in the group.

I was hoping someone could provide another example either as wartime of a post war copy.

For now, it sits in the 'I don't know' box.

It sure looks like it could have been made in the right period, but I have never seen anything like it before now. Construction looks more allied than German thou.

                Ditto that.

In the last 30 years I have never seen this model before.

Interesting. I have been searching other versions myself.
I have also one shield who is similar to the size off the one you posted Bob. It is also slight different to the known Dachau shield in construction. I guess there was other makers than Dachau, or earlier versions of this flag that were taken into use in mid/late 1943. I will post pics. later.
                  Best,
                  Gisle

                          Gisle,

I like you tunic mounted shield. The wear and age looks to perfectly matxh the tunic. Supplies were not always perfect and I believe there was a lot of non German issue insignia produced.

I have studyed Gisle`s tunic in hand several times and it looks like the shield and the other insignia have been there always and all has the same worn. I am open to that there might have been other version than the Dachau standard. IMO a very rare surviving Norge tunic with it`s armshield.

For example my untouched Norge tunic have a square norwegian flag witch we know of only to surviving examples of exact that type of square flag, the other a uniform used single flag direct given from veteran estate.
