My grand uncle who passed away a couple of years ago was part of the Ahnenerbe (Ethnology and Anthropology/Racial Anthropology) and later attached to a couple of Kriegsberichter units for research.
This desk looks similar in style as to what i see on some of the pictures of private events he attended as well as the clothing wardrobe and work desk i inherited from him, i havn't yet got all negatives made into pictures but i wonder if i see the same desk on some of the yet 50.000+ negatives not "entwickelt" yet.
I'd be careful to label it "Ahnenerbe" though. It's true that many Ahnenerbe members, including my grand uncle had lots of personally wood-made furniture and other items made because of their enthusiasm to germanic paganism and it's culture. But those items were privately purchased or gifts from one to another, not made by Ahnenerbe affiliated producers.
I'm not saying you claim so, but i've seen a couple of people in this and other forums who like to claim something to be "officially Ahnenerbe connected/produced" (or "officially SS related") just to push up the price.
All in all, it's an authentic period set as far as i can see, similar to the work desk and clothing-wardrobe i inherited from my grand uncle among other items.
I guess i have to get a paid membership in this forum to post pictures. When i did get one, i will post mine in this thread.
Just take good care of it! A family friend of my family who died in the early 1990s also passed on his woodwork pieces to his family, they didn't take proper care of it for over 20 years and last time i visited them the wood started to deterioate because of the dampness the pieces weren't protected from
I think you misunderstood. Of course it has an Ahnenerbe connection if the owner had it. I was refering to some specific people i encounter in all kinds of WW2-related forums who claim something was officially connected to the Ahnenerbe (or the SS) as in: "Produced, ordered by the Ahnenerbe".
It's an authentic and beautiful piece indeed and the woodwork style looks incredibly similar to my inherited pieces.
Btw i love your foreign volunteer webste, it helped me alot make sense of some of the pictures of my grand uncle from his time with the KB SS-Standarte Kurt Eggers and pictures of foreign volunteers. Keep up the good work!
The Ahnenerbe did have their own official Bildhauerwerkstätte which carried out personal orders of Himmler and a few other officials.
Very special pieces - keep it coming!!
Yes, but those never ended up in private homes of Ahnenerbe members (except Himmler himself of course) but only in the offices, branches and a couple of universities like Tübingen and München. All the colleagues of my grand uncle had theirs made by a couple of german, austrian and even one lorrainian (from Amneville) woodworkers/artists.
I even have a letter where Hermann Schwarz tells my granduncle where to order his clothing wardrobe because the offical Bildhauerwerkstatt you are referencing was not for private orders and homes.
And my granduncle was part of Himmlers Persönlicher Staab and a member pre-war, still didn't have the privilege to order from the official Bildhauerwerkstatt.
What officials do you mean? I wanna check in my documents because my grand uncle writes only Himmler was allowed private orders from the Bildhauerwerkstatt
Kind regards,
Timo B.

Reason: added info

Very interesting information, Timo. Is the letter something you could share with us?
Thank you all for taking the time to comment and the very interesting information given. I am thrilled to read that there is apparently a similar piece out there.
I have to admit that I have never looked into the Ahnenerbe history and was not familiar with the fact that there were “official” pieces. My apologies if the title of the thread was misleading. It was my guess from putting the pieces together and I figured I’d find an answer here. So far, it looks promising.
I should probably also add that the visor in the pics did not come with the furniture but was only added for size comparison. So no hint there rank wise. And yes, the initials are HB which really only leaves very few people.
