Well if the new buyer is happy with them that is all that really matters.

Mario is a good guy and has a keen eye. Personally I would just buy them for the sum of the parts, but that is me. Sometimes one has to take a leap of faith, but for me I would not be willing to do that. The tabs themselves are beautiful originals, just need a time machine to know if they were born like they are now. That is all. Buyer just needs to analyze the item and if it makes sense to the buyer then so be it.

Does the SS mans choose the pips like ladies to fit the color and shape? I know some of the perfectionists who collect the uniforms where the trousers and hat must fit by hue the tunic. No any reason he want hear, his opinion - Germans cannot wear such a dissonance in color balance. I'am afraid to let him know that German Army had a Steingrau trousers, that will kill him

I understand where you are coming from by saying not everyone in the German army wore their uniform "ship shape and Bristol fashion" as the English say, plus there was a war going on. The Germans seemed to have had some tolerance for a lack of uniformity, especially for front line veterans.

However on the other hand, get yourself a good pair of SS tabs in matching condition. Scrounge the other necessary materials or butcher something to get them. Get a seamstress who knows her stuff or a tailor who knows what he is doing. Add a bit of museum replicated aging. Ha-presto you have got yourself a very desirable pair of SS tabs which can sell for good money in today's market

This is the challenge with these, regardless of how rough and ready some German soldiers could be with their uniforms,

            Chris

The practice show evidenced use of different pips and even not a paired shoulder boards.

Yes agree, have seen both situations on veteran bring backs and period piping added.

Piping/ devices added to recognise the unit, company, battalion, regiment or division the German soldier was in at the time or had been in.

Different pips used on 101% original tabs or boards because of subsequent promotions at different times during the war.

Unmatched boards from 101% original sources. Although usually only slightly mismatched because they were mixed up in the quartermasters store room when issued or all the German soldier could get at the time. I have even seen a completely original matched pair of tropical boards on an original tropical tunic, as brought back, except the two boards were made from completely different shades of twill or type of twill. apart from the colour or type of twill, the boards matched in construction in every other way. Thus clearly from the same maker at the time the tunic was issued during the war.

I am well aware it was a war and these were combat uniforms. However, I have also seen stuff mucked around with or intentionally changed/ enhanced to increase its value. One has to study these things on a case by case basis, always be aware and know the signs, materials, devices of good verses bad,

                    Here are some interesting threads about Panzer tabs with "Basket Weave" piping to show what I mean;

                    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...t=Basket+Weave

                    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ghlight=Basket

"Basket Weave" piping is a bit of an ongoing discussion/ debate when found on tabs. There are more threads on WAF here about it. Personally, I have no problem accepting that it was done during WW2. The million dollar question is how much to pay for tabs with Basket Weave piping ???

this type of cords existed on whistle cords etc. There no any kind of special orders where shown which of them you can use or not. Also the most part of Luft Feldivisionen and HG collar tabs use such a pipings, even a hand applied.

Agreed and that is the challenge. Comes down to how much you are prepared to pay for such items and who will buy it off you further down the track,

It is case of going in with one's eyes open. If I like the item, it meets what is known from other period pieces and the price is right then it is worth the punt. However, one must be realistic about how others will see it when you come to sell. Not everyone shares the same enthusiasm for period oddities or variations from the norm at high prices or even low prices.

Ever seen another pink piped SS tab made like this one with that type of basket weave piping, hand applied, a range of push-on-snaps on the back but also having thread around the tab from a sewing machine sewn attachment to a collar ???

It does beg an to the question why and is probably an interesting story if only it was not lost in the history of time,

They look like nice period battle worn tabs to me but I would baulk at paying 1700euros for these, too much & as some body said who in their mind is going to buy them from you down the line.

Just my opinion but I think all SS stuff is getting far too expensive for an average working man.
