      I don't want to start an argument, but take another close look at the sweatband. It is coated type of finish and indeed does show wear and has certainly been folded....for close to 75 years based on the photo that shows it being raised to see underneath. None of that has been disturbed.

      The lining is not so much worn, but rather soiled from hair oil. I suspect that the diamond was removed when the cap was purchased as so many were and itwas not worn with one in place.

      The cap is absolutely original with the only possible exceptions of the black band and the insignia.......and the officer cord which is also impressed in the top rear edge of the visor and has been on it (or one was) for a very long time.

      If there are no extra holes on the back of the cardboard band, then this cap has always been SS....and I believe that it was. I highly doubt that is a re-band job and is certainly not a "frankenstien" cap built of parts.
