I photographed it today with my IPhone only, he said the silver manufacturer was a well known one?

Also it looks far fAr better in hand as to the quality of manufacture.

I asked him re label and hinge and as expected this is the state he received it in from the US auction house.

He lives right on the coast in New Zealand, so maybe sea air rusted it, hinge could have recently lost its leather cover, as is not a repair.
Yes a very well known maker. Maker of DE Standard Eagles and SS Totenkopf rings to name but two.

Looking at the maker, would Germans really write GAHR MUNCHEN instead of the proper GAHR MÜNCHEN?

I would be surprised if the box or seal were genuine Gahr. It would be interesting to hear more opinion on this piece.

My initial impression is that its a fantasy item.

It does raise some interesting questions. I personally don't thin that it is real because of the outward finish. Would they really present something with all those casting pock marks to Fegelein and if so, would he accept it?
Also, when I see a pic of a previous piece that was sold and then see it again later with obvious different aged features, I begin to have doubts. It makes you wonder what else is altered and real! Just my opinion and could very well be wrong. Ron

Those casting pits give me a long pause.
            Looking for a 30 '06 Chauchat magazine.

Hmmm, I am seeing the owner again tomorrow.

Not looking like good news to pass on.

This are not typical German "1" in the 211 handwriting on the label but English/American number style.

i cannot comment on originality because i havent seen something like this before. It certainly was polished over and over again..
Is it a solid silver piece? it seems still quite light weight if solid silver. Has it silver halmarks?

                  here is Freislers Signet..
solid silver and over 500g heavy..9cm in height
To me this one looks much better in quality..but of course this tells nothing. Although the Fegelein Letters look strange to me compared to the Freisler signet.

I find it hard to believe Gahr would allow that standard of casting and engraving leave their workshop

My friend has taken the bad news fairly well, considering his own horse also lost at the races today....

                          Bad news?
I think you could easily have an original piece. Having worked for Cartier Im very familiar with the look and overall finish of a quality piece...which this is
Dont forget that item would have been handled a lot and been in contact with rings etc which cause marks..the horses cheeks etc..its where the grip would be...
                          I think its 100%.

this exhibits much more surface wear than the Fegelein item....just look above the line of the top of the wings for instance

i just did read the "SS Totenkopf Reiter Standarte 1" was formed in May 1940 and was redesignated to"SS Kavallerie Regiment 1" in Feb 1941.
so only about 10 month....of course the wax stamp could have been used privatley by Fegelein a little longer...but makes not much sense to me. Although it shows alot of wear..even on the bottom...but it has a "well used" case. If it was used so often we should be able to find a Fegelein Wax Seal somewhere.
Still in doubt that it is solid silver piece because of the weight.
                                Maybe its filled with something?
Even double the size of the horse head, the weight would still be much less than the freisler stamp.
it reminds me more of a chess knight figurine.
I dont want to talk this piece bad..just my observations. I find this piece quite interesting but still am in doubt.

here youll find more pics from the old auction
