SS Medical Officer tunic – Veteran-acquired by Bill Rannow of “Collectors Militaria”

Thought I’d take a little time, and bring this back out again – the SS Medical Officer tunic that Bill Rannow [Owner of “Collectors Militaria”] brought to light many years ago. As many of you already know, it was obtained by Bill from the Veterans family – then sold to Dr. Ron Distelhorst [who at one time operated the “Warelics.com” site], and eventually turned up for sale again by Kris Anderson of “Oakleaf Militaria”.
    <O</O
It was Bill Rannow who made the direct Veteran purchase sometime back before the year 2000. He once mentioned photographs he made of the entire horde of material that the Veteran brought back – to include this tunic . . . but to my knowledge, these photographs have not yet surfaced. Back in 2007, here is what Bill had to say about the discovery - in another topic on WAF . . . Hope you all enjoy!

[You may notice I tossed in the "Mouse Hat" when taking the photos - hope it's not too distracting]

“Man how you guys can get so off amazes me. This stuff did not come from a Dr. Go and read my posts again. I said I did not know about the Doctors other stuff meaning the Doctor in Chicago, I sold the uniform to.
    <O</O
Here it is again guys so listen closely. I had heard about this collection about 6 years before. The guy who owned it had Alzheimer's and had been put in a nursing home. The brother did not want to sell it before his brother died. Well 6 years later I got a call and to my surprise along with the Japanese swords was a pile of German uniforms, Hats, Swords Helmets, Flags ect. Some of the flags were still in the original tubes he had mailed them home in after the war. This is what started me collecting German items. Most of the German stuff was just unbelievable. The guy was in both Germany and Japan after the war and sent piles of stuff home. All the stuff was un-messed with and original. This was about 8 years ago I think.
    <O</O
I found GDC on the web and posted some pics and all the sudden every big dealer and collector in the country was calling and emailing me trying to buddy up.

<O</OI have also emailed Kris and told him if the tunic does not sell I would love to buy it back because I know it is good.
    <O</O
I am sorry so many of you guys have been burned bad and don't believe anything but things like this do happen.
    <O</O
Believe me I have been burned a few times for a lot of money but I don't constantly cry about it. I just move on and learn my lesson!
    <O</O
I only posted this because I felt it would help clear up some of the mystery behind this uniform.
    <O</O
    Hope this helps!”

Wow what a set and the dress belt with SS embossed flashes
This is what dreams are made of, finding an unmolested group like this. You even have the doctor's riding breeches.
He was obviously assigned to a unit that was not authorized a Divisional (or Regimental) cuff title. Nice

Happy to see you found my post interesting, and worthy of comment, "NickG" . . . but the belt was not discovered with the tunic and pants. As I mentioned previously, the tunic and pants were found by Bill Rannow - and eventually sold by Kris Anderson of "Oakleaf Militaria" . . . but the belt was found by Bruce Herman of "Grenadier Military Antiques" . . . and the "Mouse Hat" was last turned over by a fellow named Rick Turner - who used to post frequently on "GermanDaggers.com". It was Rick Turner who acquired the "Mouse Hat" from Bob Hritz, having been [reputedly] one of Bob's famous "Motel Buy's" of the past.

The ' mouse hat' is one of the few items I regret ever selling. I would love to have it back in my collection, but am very pleased that it is in a colledtion where it is treasured by a good guy.

Very nice...I like the deep turn back French cuffs on the tunic,I have seen that feature a lot in period photos of SS officers.

                That is an amazing grouping!!!
Of course there are groupings like that still to be found by the collecting community.
I have found a couple myself, during the years I have been collecting.
But most grouping are just made up ****, IMO.

                  I agree, great grouping!

I also agree with Ludwig, I have seen many made up tunics in respected collections here in Norway, but ofcourse they have collected for so and so long and think that matters more.

Appreciate the comments guy's - Thanks!

You know, Bob - I've always said that if I ever parted with the "Mouse Cap", it would have go back to you . . . Trouble is, I like the darned thing so much - that it's one of those very few items I know I too would regret doing so with. I've already parted with it once - for a brief time, I "mortgaged" it to a family member when I needed some fast cash . . . and found out just how much I really enjoyed having it around. But mark my words - if it ever takes flight again, it will be on it's way back to your collection.

                      Thanks,

Hey Hans - I intend to take more photos again some day - and will make certain to get some good shots of the boards for you.

Hello Scotty - No worries there, as that thought has never crossed my mind. It may be making a trip to the SOS this week . . . but only to let a few friends get a gander at it - and I don't plan on leaving it behind, when coming back Home.
