Clearly a good one, Sarge! The sleeve cloth and zig-zag stitching
even look believable. But is it a tropical version or just age-toned?

Here is one of mine for comparison. I put it up on a thread a couple weeks ago and it generated the same question regarding color. From the front it looks like it might be a tropical, but from the reverse, you can clearly see that it is a silver/gray that is simply dirty from field wear. I wouldn't have known this had I not removed it from the large piece of tunic it came on when I bought it as a teenager. At the time, I thought it would look better displayed next to my other eagles if it didn't have the extra cloth.

I recommend you not do the same!

Sgt Fury - Only you can decide what's acceptable for your own collection, but if it was me, I would not want this eagle. It does appear to be a tropical eagle, and certainly you should be 100% on this point before you decide to keep it...Secondly, the zig-zag stitch used I've never seen on an original bevo eagle sewn to a sleeve. For whatever reason, the bevo eagles I've seen on uniforms or on original cutoffs were always done with a much smaller and tighter zig-zag stitch. In my experience, the stitch shown is the style used with the embroidered style of eagle...Lastly, take a look at the examles below of some of the recent attempts at creating 'original' sleeve eagle cutoffs. You will notice, tropical eagles, similar stitching, similar wear, etc. You be the judge...Best, John

My favorite, the rare tropical panzer tunic eagle.

Last one, and I believe this is the one that was posted on the forum several months ago, but it was no longer tropical. It had been falsely aged to remove the yellow dye and make it look like a grey one.

Here is an original example, with the stitch I would expect to see used with a bevo eagle.

Still not sure? Try increasing the color saturation of your photo and see what happens. I have taken the liberty and you can see what happens. I can assure you, the same doesn't happen with 'worn' examples of grey bevo eagles...Best, John

My advice, keeping searching for another one - there are originals to be found.

                            John,

I would be interested in your opinion of mine, which I posted above.

                            Thanks,
                            Brad

                              Brad,
Your eagle is original. Did you look at it under a very high powered loop or if you have access even a microscope? My guess is that you will see traces of yellow dye. I wouldn't be suprised if your eagle was actually a tropical version. Here is what it looks like when you increase the color saturation...Best, John
