Not sure of this is the right area to post in...
I have been a long-time collector of WW2 German and Japanese items. Much of my collection focusses on the time pieces of the era.
I was also a Jewelry Engraver for 10 years.
One thing that strikes me VERY odd, is the amount of SS Engraved Cigarette Cases and Pocket Watches that seem to come up...with VERY elaborate engravings.
The biggest contradiction is the quality of the item, compared to the engraving.
Almost all of these "supposed" SS pocket watches are from LOW quality makers....which make no sense - a highly detail of engraving on a substandard crappy maker watch?
On top...ALL the writing styles are generally the same...and all done by hand, as if the SAME person engraved every single one of them.
A standard Kriegsmarine/ Luftwaffe watch or clock was always of excellent quality...IWC, Hanhart, Lemania, Laco, Glashutte, Panerai, Junghans, etc...
Yet...the ELITE of the elite gets the lowest quality crap around?
To me, that makes no sense whatsoever.
The combination of low quality watches, along with engraving that is almost identical in every way, leads me to believe that all of these are fake.
My clock/watch collection is massive, and as much as I would love to have one, based on my own engraving and collecting experience, I have completely stayed away.
Above comments also pertain to the SS engraved cig cases.
Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?
Mike
