Regarding the split in the back of the SS ring, I have a Luftwaffe pilot's ring with an identical split.

I took the Luft ring to my jeweler, who also does serious repairs. He said that the split in the ring was "medic cut."

He said "no jeweler would do this cut to enlarge the ring." "A medic would cut it like this in some kind of medical emergency."

Interesting thought.
