    Ss visor

this visor looks about 1936 and I though that point all insignias were standardized to the newer skull and eagle...

Very nice cap IMO. I agree it would likely have had 2nd-pattern eagle and skull. But early insignia WAS sometimes worn around that time. Also, 1st and 2nd-pattern insignia were often mixed and matched in different combinations. Unless there is pretty ironclad proof that this was the original eagle, I'd get rid of it as soon as possible. The cap deserves proper SS eagle. As for the skull, I don't mind seeing early skulls on SS caps, but I'm not fond of this style of early skull. The type I'm posting was far more widely used, and would be better, IMO. Of course, the 2nd-pattern insignia would be perfect, but plenty of $$$$.
Notice: The wool on my cap is smooth, and not "ribbed", so the early insignia is definitely appropriate, plus the cap style is consistent with early insignia.

I agree Cap itself is 100%...Your right on the Insignia but there are SO many caps around I hate having to come up with Reasons and excuses for pieces...Anything is possible : ) I like the Oberservation regarding the Smooth Material

Can you clarify........."reasons and excuses"...... do you mean questioning whether the insignia is original to the cap? IMO, replaced insignia on SS caps is so common, it doesn't really bother me. IMO, the reason for this phenomenon is because most GI's didn't want to have to carry around a visor cap, so they yanked the insignia off for souvenirs. Of course, it's wonderful to have the whole thing be completely original. Part of the fun, though, in having to replace missing insignia, is the hunt for the PERFECT eagle or skull, having the same amount of "wear" as the cap itself. This is just my opinion, but the Political eagle on this cap just looks WRONG, even though it WAS sometimes worn by SS. As for the skull, I've seen this type on an original SS kepi, but I've never seen one in a period photo on a visor cap, though I'm sure they exist. The cap itself , is so nice it deserves a lot of thought and patience in finding the best set, should you decide to change it.
NOTE: The first thing I'd do, is closely examine the inside, to look for evidence of a previous set of insignia. More than one set of holes for each insignia, and you have your answer as to whether they're original to the cap.
