Nice Heer officers side cap worn by SS officer...
I guess the Heer soldier could have been involved in a combat engagement side by side with SS troops and awarded the medal by the SS commander who made the recommendation and he ended up
wearing a loaner SS helmet for the award ceremony.

Maybe a Heer unit that had been absorbed into the SS?
Or like said above, just a loaner helmet for the ceremony..

Man, I just don't know; but it's a super cool picture nonetheless!!!
              Thanks for posting it!

That could have been a possibility I guess with foreign volunteers like the Estonians (and Walloons) who transferred...but the shoulderstrap cypher leads me to believe its not
a foreign volunteer who switched branches...and usually when transferred it is a unit level event and they get kitted with SS specific uniforms and gear to include SS soldbuchs,
so uniformly done at an SS barracks/training facility, not individually absorbed (while in the field) creating such mis-match...Not likely..

Loaner SS helmet (singular) on Heer soldier, the other helmets of course match the SS uniforms...so he borrowed one for the ceremony and image taking event...
Maybe he was a specialist (vehicle driver, radio repairman special trade trooper on loan in the SS unit...
My personal experience: when I was in the military serving in Germany during the Cold War I occasionally got "loaned out" to other units (within our Brigade)
because of my double function as Battalion level RO (radio operator) + truck driver function...(communications shelter equipped of course)
Mechanized Infantry was my home, but "on loan" and attached to a Mechanized 155 self-propelled Howitzer Battery unit, while on maneuvers...Those things did happen...

The other much simpler explanation is that he got mixed in with the SS unit during combat operations and earned his medal while attaching himself to that unit (fog of war)
and was recommended and awarded his medal by the SS unit, hence the ceremony taking place among other recipients who are all SS.

Nick, how can you tell the other three guys to his left are SS?

One has an SS tab it appears...I guess the NCO on the left could also be Heer still...You are correct! Definitely a mixed group!
The officer looks great in his upgraded (enlisted) field tunic with SS bullion eagle and converted Heer pattern officer's overseas cap...
