    Don't do that either. Get some moth balls and wrap them up in in some aluminium foil. Punch a lot of holes in it so the camphor fumes can get out. Put it in a box with the uniform on a platform above the moth balls and put a tight lid on it for a few weeks. It's real important the cloth does not touch the moth balls! Open the box, and hang the uniform in a dry well ventilated area to air out til the smell is gone and you should be all etc. Some use different insectides but I am not sure which to use.

      Okay Nutmeg, your advice is much appreciated and I will follow up on it.

      Meanwhile, I got back my uniform from the drycleaners 2 days ago so now at least that is safe. In regards, to the shoulderboard...
      Can anyone tell me what the current market value for one unterscharfuhrer shoulderboard with pip is these days? I don't have a digital camera and so cannot show mine here...
      I told the old drycleaner woman that since it was the Christmas season I had decided not to sue her although I would have to absorb the costs. She brazenly retorted that I should go right ahead and sue her. And so now I think that I will take her on up her offer, but do not know the legal procedures here in NY.

        Catching up a bit late on this thread, firstly not too sure Stateside, but will the business have public liability insurance for this sort of thing? Which, if they do, then I would have thought a claim against that would have stood a good chance.

        Secondly, you have asked the price for one board, I think you should actually be getting prices for two, as your item will be unbalanced with two non matching boards if you only get one. I would have thought you need to be thinking about getting the item back to its orginal condition not just a replacement.

        As already mentioned in the thread, you should be going to dealers and get some prices either written or downloads from their websites to varify your claim.

          legal liability

          Legal liability is based upon the failure of someone to meet a duty or standard of care that they have undertaken. In this case, a laundry has a duty to get every day clothes clean without ruining them. Unless this establishment held itself out as a conservator or restorer, they are probably liable for the value of a tear in an every day type jacket, not the value of a historic item. The contrary would be true if you indicated the dollar value of the jacket and they then accepted the duty to restore it and to work on it. Most museums have conservation departments and you are better working through them. An unfortunate incident nonetheless.

            The simplest way to deal with her is to file a Small Claims Lawsuit against her. If you go to your local Municipal or Superior Court (depends on locality)they will have the neccessary forms. It is simple but it does take time. Before you do anything in the hearing you must have everything ready. The judges will not give you more time to make your case. It will be decided right there. I say fry the bitch.

              TW: I've been following your post, damn shame, but typical. This is what I would do: 1st, contact the local better business bureau, and file a complaint with them. They won't do much, but it's nice to have it on file. Next, New York State should have a consumer affairs department, contact them ASAP and file a complaint with them as well. Next on the agenda, see if your local township has a permits and licensing department, make a complaint with them as well. Lastly, this is probably a small claims case. Forms should be available online to download, you can fill them out and make the case yourself in small claims court.

                All the best and I will let you know how things turn up. I hope that for those who didn't have such an experience and had thought of doing something like I did, this will be a good exa,ple of what not to do and to save yourself the frustration.

                  Your story makes me cringe and also angry.Its the way of the world,people couldn't care less about other peoples property and they couldn't even begin to realise the value of an old army jacket[which is all it is to them].I'm sure if you accidently scratched her car she would be all over you demanding compensation.The states is probably quite different in some ways but it seems your small claims court is like ours however I am sure that the defendants there are able to drag it out,as an example I had to take a guy through civil courts for the massive amount of $350 Australian and 15 months later I have only got back $150!Persevere as she should be paying compensation and her attitude is very ignorant.

                        Very sad ,If I were you I would pay the local dossers $30 each to vomit outside her premises once every hour .If I were her I would say "listen you nazi nutter (not saying you are),how would you like the whole of the neighbour hood to know you collect SS uiforms".So best thing to do would be to put it down to experience and move on .Rob.

                          Ah Hah hah! Manny or should I say Don Corleone, that is a good one. I was told a long time ago that shoving a candy bar into the gas of a car would also do the trick, but your idea is much more efficient.
                          Robb, yeah I know, I would probably spend the $30 on myself and puke on her frontstep meself. That is quite funny I am getting a lot of good advice on this and you guys are helping me see the humour in it all.
                          Arran, you mentioned that there is a way to hopefull mend this rip? The rip is on the tongue (lower part) of the shoulderstraps. Someone had spilled har glue on the eyelet area around the tongue. Due to that area becoming hardened and brittle that is where the rip/break occured. It is so hard a needle couldnt poke through. Not unless you drilled it. So I dont know what to do about it.
                          Any help would be appreciated.
