I found this SS recruiting poster and need advice...

Hey Guys
I primarily collect German 35mm photographica (cameras, slides, negatives, etc.). As such, I am no expert in the area of SS recruiting posters and need some advice about the item I found shown below. While perusing through a local antique shop today, I found this framed SS Gerbirgstruppen recruiting poster. The seller wants approximately $1000 for it but before I even consider such a purchase, I'd like some advice about what to look for to determine if it may be genuine. Unfortunately, as I said, the poster is framed so I can't remove it and I also can't see the reverse because it has a paper backing. Because of this, I may not be able to check specifics except those that address details which can only be seen from the front, and under glass. Any suggestions? TIA!

You need to get this out of the frame and check to see the printing address on the bottom. This poster has been reproduced. The one below is an original. Credit to TonyS on the WAF: www.ssrelics.net. He has a site that features many originals, including this one.

Thank you for the information. I don't think the seller will let me take the poster out of the frame and because of its rarity, I can't believe it's really genuine. Still, I found another original that was auctioned at Hermann Historica in 2013 and it shows no printing address at the bottom, which really makes it confusing to say the least...

I would expect the original posters to all look basically the same. The poster behind glass is nowhere close to the original one posted. The background and details are entirely different. Original is sharper, with more contrast. There are minute aspects of the original that are missing. Wouldn't the absence of the bottom writing, automatically disqualify the poster in question?

I believe the one at HH, as well as this one, is a reproduction of the original. There would be a printing address at the bottom of the original for this specific poster, imo.

I am sure you and the other naysayers are correct and the poster I saw today is in all probability, a fake. I am glad I did not impulse buy it!
It's gratifying to have the expertise in this forum to rely upon in such circumstances!

sorry being so late, yes like wolfslair44 HH and the poster you found are clearly reprint, check the darkness of the poster this is very obvious.
Also Anton designs were used for specific and local SS Erganzungamter, and were usually not generic ones.

Just to chime in, as others said: Nothing made of paper will be bought that is not taken out of a frame. You really have to look at it closely...even to touch and smell the paper to get that sense it is at least old enough for what it purports to be.

And as others said, HH is not a proof of authenticity...they peddle fakes like all the others.

Thanks to Scott for posting the image - it saves me having to do it.

As Michael says you have to see these things out of a frame. It must have the printers info at the bottom and also the trademark symbol of the SS Head Office. Most of Anton's work was done for the SS Head Office and has their information and their trademark symbol.

The Hermann Historica poster in my opinion is a fake.

That trademark symbol has been faked and I'll post a faked one so you get a general idea of it. It looks similar to this but is never blue and never stamped on a poster like this.

people not registered on M321 will be unable to see the picture.



The darkness of the poster clearly proves that this is a reprint.
The poster is also not complete, the sides are cut short.
