Looks like you can see part of an collar tab on the guy to the right behind the man in black. It might have been censored for the Sigrunes in post-war/present day Germany or, more likely in my opinion, by the owner/seller of the photo to discourage the reproduction when posted online and/or for sale. A watermark of sorts. So many photos ends up on Ebay these days being sold as originals by people who has just taken someone else scanned photo found on forums like these for example.

Thank you Pman. So there were white tunics that pre-date the M-39. So are these M-37 SS-Weisser Rock's? Please excuse my ignorance. I do have some reference books but have a lot to learn.

This is an original photo I scanned a few months ago. I'll dig it out of my collection and re-scan it front and back and post it here without the touch-up's I usually add(contrast, sharpen, etc).

White SS tunics began service in 1936. Remember the famous shot of the guy wearing the white SS tunic and white hat at the 1936 Olympics. I think he was from a cavalry unit.

Here is the photo "au naturel" without touch-ups. The last photo has contrast added to see the Agfa markings better. UV negative. Typical personal photo snap-shot that measures approx. 3"x2". Explains lack of detail that a professional photo would contain and I think dismisses the idea that the collar tabs were covered over in the lab. Scanned at 600 ppi as that is the highest setting I have on my scanner. I want to add that when I bought this photo online it wasn't advertized as anything special or even SS. I think the seller had it listed as WW2 Wehrmacht. So I wonder if this was taken in 1936 and like Pman suggests they were just issued the tunic and were posing for a photo to show them off. Would the tunics have the blank collar tabs attached to them fresh from the factory and later removed and the appropriate insignia added?

I think they are waiters or bus boys.

...or milk men...or male strippers...or SS soldiers getting suited up for their trip to the secret Nazi moonbase...

No shoulder boards or armbands, on the tunics, but with collar tabs? That is pretty hard to explain. If new uniforms were just obtained, I would expect no insignia or all insignia, not partial insignia.

In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.

Duct tape can't fix stupid, but it can muffle the sound.

Blackwatch1, thank you very much for taking the time to scan your picture again. I am now convinced the line you are seeing on the edge of the tabs is just the scanner adjusting to the abrupt change from white to black.
As to the insignia one can only speculate, but in support of BrianK's suggestion I have certainly seen photographs of double black, blank tabs used on SS waiters' jackets.

I'm having a good laugh picturing these men goose-stepping around a dinning room taking orders and delivering food
