    SS cap question

Today at a musuem I saw what looked like a M43 cap. Question for me is what is it. The cap was similiar in the construction of a 43, but it has two silver SS buttons in the front. The SS was centered in each button, and the button was surrounded by a wreath. The cap was black, and there was either silver or light blue bullion piping around the top seam of the hat. The hat was slouched in the display cabinet, but it appeared to have a pin similiar to an army eagle on the front. What was it?

    Thanks Jeff

I have seen copies of that hat for sure ( I think I may even have one around that fits me) The buttons with the runes & the wreaths were originaly used on the Mess Dress Tuxedo. I have never seen them used on a real cap.

      Jerry,

Out of all days I didn't bring my camera If I remember the details correctly, the buttons were similiar to the SS cufflinks discussed on GD, except these were silver. I couldn't get a close look at the cap, it seemed I came on the last open day of the year and they "were" closed, but the gent let me take a quick tour. The hat was displayed with other stuff a vet brought back from the war. Maybe I'll see if I can get some pics soon.

I have seen the original buttons loose, and I have seen M43's without buttons. So add a vet that can sew with some time on his hands...
I still don't think they were ever worn that way durring the period.

Nice of him to let you in. last month I got skunked by a guy that closed 1/2 hr. early.

1 of the phoney black m43 panzer caps (from ww2 limited from st louis i think )had the two silver lightning bolt buttons on the front....probably a fake cap from the 60s-70s

I did find a similiar photo of the cap, except this one does not have any piping on the cap. Are there original caps such as this, or does the musuem have a repro.

            Thanks Jeff

              Thanks Jeff
The museums of the world are full of fakes. I think this is one of them.
