True tropical is somewhat more affordable than fieldgray!
A camo Anorak is the cheapest solution but again no period SS photopraphic proof exists as far as I know which is puzzling...
That's why these are always documented by the use of reenactors in reference works....
but perhaps someone can show a real SS photo of these in wear to erase any doubt of true SS use?
Hi Nick, There are many images of SS soldier wearing the Italian camo schemes , in the style of M40 jackets, and trousers, so saying that I would think that SS soldiers would of worn this anorak's as it was a accepted camo pattern used by them.

True they used a lot of Italian camo in the SS ...LAH and HJ divisions primarily...which in theory explains the SS connection with the anoraks in same material (if there is one)
but here is the difference:
Mostly company tailor made....(tunics, caps, helmet covers...) Such items were NEVER mass produced (factory made) in Italian camo...
These anoraks (following the SS pattern) on the other hand were mass factory produced...
So much so that unused inventories ended up in the post war Czechoslovakian army... so that begs the question;
where are the SS use images? (only Heer) or was it a Heer contract?
Second, very interesting discussion on the Italian camo anorak and great images of in in wear by the army!
Third, a recap of budget SS mannequins:
1. Anorak especially earlier, non Italian camo ones, with Heer pants;
2. Sahariania jacket with SS trop shorts;
3. Zeltbahn with Heer pants - what kind of shirt under the Zelt?
4. WSS overcoat with Heer pants;
All mannequins can use relatively cheap ND helmets, knobelbrecher, veltboots which are the same for Heer and WSS.
IMO
5. Kradmelder coat with belt with WSS buckle, also makes for a budget WSS soldier
To be honest, I think the idea to start with is wrong; how to build a cheap W-SS mannequin and make it up with Heer items. With the same idea you can build a FJ with a standard LW helmet and LW Feld Div jacket want indeed historically correct, FJ were outfitted like this as well. But aren't you a bit fooling yourself? But of course, to each his budget and according preference.
As stated, the best option for a 100% original W-SS display for relatively less money is the Sahariana set-up, of course except for the cap.
Re the anorak in Italian camo. IMO these are genuine SS issued garments. No reason to believe Heer would adopt so late in the war a relatively expensive item that was primarily a SS model and has always been. Only Polizei troops have been issued with the early versions and their direct link with the SS is evident.
Also these anoraks have never been very popular since very cumbersome in wear and furthermore it was after all the SS that adopted the Heer parka in its own camo schemes.
That only a few period photos have surfaced with last ditch troops wearing these Italo camo anoraks does not imply these were not originally SS. The HJ boy is glad in a AG wrap as well and he certainly does not belong to this branch.

As long as it is historically correct I do not see the problem. What the idea here is is to avoid the incredibly expensive smocks and field grey tunics - with the latter unfortunately having frequently reapplied insignia, and create a relatively cheap but historically correct alternative. If Heer trousers were worn regularly by WSS - and this was suggested earlier in the thread, than I see - historically speaking - no problem with using Heer trousers on a WSS mannequin.
PS: I agree with your comments on the Italian camo anorak.

No problem and of course you are correct, to each his own. But of course also the field grey trousers have been SS produced, if building a SS mannequin, that is what i would prefere personally. You can still always make consessions regarding equipment; that would indeed perhaps be a bridge too far, having it all 'SS' marked.

It is not a question of preference - we all share your preference - but in this case of budget.
