Its actually a General's (fake) hat with the silver piping (as opposed to white for officers) and 9 out of 10 of those presented usually turn out to be fakes...
Such postings do not get removed as others can learn from such mistakes!
Sorry to hear your gamble did not work out...Vets often add to their souvenir collection in post war years...so the source is not always bullet proof!

i cant comment on the cap as its not my cup of tee ,but with the insignia you are most perhaps wrong,the are in my opinion good very late war assmann.

Is the top of the hat sweat shield soft or stiff....and I still believe they made three pronged ss skulls....the sweat band sure looks old...I would go back and ask them again if he ever collected anything stuff post war, if not ,it cant be....kansas is a gold mine for nazi stuff...I would keep it even as a fake if you have nothing into it....but still go back and ask again.. or call em again .What else was in the lot? (just out of curiosity?)
