Here is another photo of a man in uniform with no shoulder boards. It is ID size. I picked this one up a while back. He too is not a spring chicken so could he of been transferred from a different branch of the SS into the SS-Totenkopfverbände? Maybe as a camp guard because of his age?

He is an SS-Mann, perhaps in process of being transfered to the T-Division. I would assume the photo is from ca. 39/40.

TV-men were usualy significantly older than the men of the VT. That changed in demjansk (winter of 41/42).

As Fritz says his age is entirely consistent with the early members of the ss tk. They were drawn from the camp guards before the french campaign and were then gradually replaced by young recruits after that
