    2 SS cap for review

    Hello everyone,

I would appreciate your comments on those two consignments.
I think both caps need to be discussed.

    Thanks!

Heer M43 cap and the visor cap has a fake eagle from that long-range photo.

Agreed! The E43 depot stamp and RBNr would indeed make the cap an Army one for me and the hand-stitched SS trap is another indication that it was later added...
Btw I never saw E43 (Erfurt Depot, 1943) in a cap before...on uniforms yes... Correction, seen it on rabbit fur caps (Pelzmützen), so OK after all but = Heer!

Have a look at this thread Nick,

        post numbers 29, 17 & 3 show 101% black panzer M43's with the "E43" (Erfurt Depot, 1943) marking.

In fact when you look at this thread, you see M43 caps made by the same maker as the SS badged example that started this thread. Look at the difference in the font of the two stamps. There is your first red flag. I bet if you put these black panzer M43's beside this thread starter then you would find differences. The warning bells of a fake are ringing,

It seems to me that all the markings and font sizes are different on the panzer caps.
Now concerning this thread from what I can tell I like the visor and the field cap in particular the applied marking and font.

Thanks very much everyone for your opinions!

The M43 will have to go back to the consigner then.
Any more for the visor maybe?

                M-43

IMO, the trap on the M-43 is an original insignia, but was applied to the cap after it was already torn. That's why it's sewn like it is. Probably torn off an original cap earlier.

I agree entirely ... probably to cover the shadow of a smaller Heer trap as I said at the beginning.

                    Speaking of RBnR numbers

                    0/0250/0017
                    It is dated 1944.
Does anyone have an idea of the manufacturer?

The visor has a chance of being good
However as Ian points out the eagle
                      looks like a fake

                          Klaus:

The W-SS dress cap "Passes" for me!

I like the overall appearance - ribbed lining, color choice, sweat shield sewn directly
to the body instead of having a separate cloth 'support band' sewn to it. Black enamel
buttons look good - especially with a black leather strap & that strap looks like it has
the proper thickness to it's construction.

One thing to check before giving it the "Stamp Of Approval"....Check the celluloid shield
& press on it to see how it sounds. You want to hear a "crackle" sound....A good sharp
                          "crackle" sound to your eardrum.
If you get a "crumple" sound....A dull 'no life to it' type
of sound then you have a shield that is not 'celluloid' but postwar plastic.

If it's the original 'celluloid' shield it is over 70 years old & would be very "crisp" & the
sound it gives off will indicate that easily. If you only get the "Crumple" sound that I
tell you about then you have a "postwar plastic" shield....Thus you have a "Repro".

                          Ron.
