Bakelite is bakelite and plastic is plastic. 2 different things. Bakelite was in use during the 30-40's. This item is not a medal. Looks like a paperweight, souvenir type item. Not sure who would make only one or who would even go through the trouble to make such an obscure detailed item. I have never seen one until now.

The problem is that you said that it came from "your grandmother", when some members here said it was maybe done with a laser cut ?

It reminds me of the last "Totenkopfring" topic, where someone in the US tried to pass a fake as an original...

        See You

the plaque is guaranteed bakelite ... I collect not only since yesterday, apparently as some other here ...;-) I hope you all know the bakelite rapid test ... yes? no? oh shame

but well, the label is indeed absolute fantasy - laser cut - and plastic -

I am overwhelmed by such tremendous expertise and specialist knowledge

        kindest regards Olaf

          Hi,

more documents used by the SS school Braunschweig to recruit new volunteers (first as adults, second as HJ members).

The SS school of Braunschweig made specially for the HJ in 1942-1943 a booklet to recruit in the Waffen-SS. To enlist from the HJ to the SS was made more easier (volunteers don't needed the signature of their parents if i clearly remember), the campaign/booklet was called "Deutsche Jugend melde dich freiwillig zur Waffen-SS". Artwork by Anton.

Front cover of the booklet, and red insert. Courtesy of suedsteiermarkversand.at.

Back of the booklet. Printed in Braunschweig.

Promotional card included with this kind of booklet. See below for the different version included in the "Dich Ruft Die SS" booklet.

NOTA : other special small leaflets, using the same artwork as the Braunschweig one, were produced when the campaign to recruit HJ members was started in late 1942, early 1943. Thousand of volunteers formed with officers and NCO the (in)famous "Hitlerjugend" division. Original training was done in the Wildflecken training camp. At least 2 or 3 variants are known.

The Braunschweig SS school did before a special card insert that was included with the famous booklet "Dich Ruft Die SS". It was not targeting the HJ.

Lot proposed by Mario of Hiscoll, courtesy of him.

Note the promotional card, different to the one printed for the HJ booklet.

The fact that the item is bakelite does not prove anything unfortunately. You can get bakelite items for dozen of manufacturers still today, almost anywhere in the world. The collector market is now the main use for it.
But i'm sure that specialists can check this item and see if it was done with laser or any other method of mold. It can be done with professional microscope and similar methods.

          See You

          Vince

                      Hi,

thanks PKAliebhaber for finding other copies of that medal !

fortunately for us, the fact that other items were proposed on auction websites has nothing to do with the fact that the item is pre-1945. It is proving nothing.
Best examples : SS-Germanische Leistungsrune in gold, the Bad Polzin Lebensborn gift bag, and many many more items that were talked about on the WAF.

                      Teutoburger Münzauktion Gmbh
                      Auction 66 (June 1-2, 2012)
                      Lot 4434
                      Estimate : 80
                      Starting price : 45
                      Price realized : 80

                      Berliner Auktionshaus für Geschichte
                      Auction 83 (March 2011)
                      Lot 3483
                      Estimate : -
                      Starting price : 120
                      Price realized : unsold

Personal note : Berliner Auktionshaus is having sometimes great SS items, but in another hands, we can also make a list of bogus/strange/alien items that were proposed. Just check lot 3482 on Auction 83 for example.

And again, even if the medal is from bakelite and is not cut from laser, it prove nothing too.

                      See You

                          Sure! I havent said it!

                          The Berliner Auktionshaus also note:

"Falls es sich bei diesem Artikel um ein Belegstück aus der Zeit 1933-1945 handelt beachten Sie bitte folgendes:"

                            Hi,
as the token is very, very detailed, I want to mention that pre-45, the lion base was surrounded by poles and chains.

Only after 1945, this was removed.
I can not see those here. For such a detailed token, I wonder why it missed here if it was pre-45 ?

                              Hi,

                              thanks for the info compressore.
Actually i checked on Delcampe and EBay dozen of postcards from the Burgplatz, but i was unable to date every of them, despite i noticed some differences.

If i want to be on the Evil's side, i may say that if the medal is real, the poles and chains were not included in the design to simplify the artwork.
But it is doubtful, because the rest of the Burgplatz is having amazing details.

Here is something similar, 5.5cm diameter, if anybody has Villach items from the TR contact me as I collect them. I do not know if this one is bakelite or plastic, sorry for the out of focus picture. I know bakelite is wood-based and plastic petroleum-based.
