    nice

The tab itself is a standard machine embroidered tab, and the piping appears original. The huge question on these field upgrade pieces is ascertaining when the upgrade was made. The tab appears period original by virtue of patina, overall appearance and it woild be nice to check if the piping and/or piping stitching is of period, non-glow thread. And Peter Whammond at German Militaria is a respected expert--not infallible, no one is, but well-respected so I'd feel comfortable taking the plunge on this piece.

Impossible to say, if the piping is wartime applied or not. IMO.

I agree, but would also like to stress that naturally one needs to compare the wear of the base rune tab and the pink piping. I see quite a lot of wear and what perhaps is moth nips on the rune tab, but the piping looks more fresh. Can be totally ok, but needs further inspection. Its also hard to say from these photos. A better judgement can be made when you have the item in hand. As said its an honest dealer and no need to worry if something is wrong.

In general I believe the majority of these tabs for sale are post war creations, but of course originals also exists.

          Cheers

It appears to me to be a nice wartime tab, with nothing to indicate it was modified post-war.

            regards, Robert

My only comment is this. The rune and upper portions of the rayon are worn and dirty, but underneath there is no evidence of ever being sewn on a tunic. It could all be original but who really can say for sure.

                pz tab

This sort of modification was more common than collectors realize,
for me its a completely original tab and period piping!

Hands-on inspection would tell the truth immediately, just bent the piping back and see if was there for 70 years (hidden piping behind the tab would preserve better and remain more fresh than outside)

But even that 70 years can be done quite easily by someone who knows what he is doing...
