    Strange tab on a portrait

I have this in my collection.
Really I don't see a runic tab on this portrait (but it might be the perspective), but if it isn't...what is this?..."7"?!...Estonian?...
    Can someone help me?

    Thanks a lot in advance
    Stefano

thanks...I tried to reproduce the angle with a runic tab but it seems to me that it works in a different way...

Maybe post war printed? You see this on death notices quite often, insignia is either blacked out or distorted so picture is "legal" to display.

The tab is bent over, we see the bottom of two and the cross bar of one.

Yes maybe (as you said and as I've seen on many death cards)...it forms part of a small konvolut of this officer and sincerely it don't seams a post war photo or re-painted photo...

Perhaps a numbered rune tab with the number removed, the runes look like they are not in the centre and instead placed more towards the "end" of the tab (like with a numbered tab).

                    Cheers

Just a wild shot in the dark, estonian tab most likely

Great photos. In the DOT camo uniform he's been promoted to Captain (= 2 pips) Hauptsturmfuhrer!
In the earlier image with open collar tunic he is just a 2nd lieutenant (Untersturmfurer) based on his collar tab with 3 pips only (no bars...)
meaning no pips should be on the shoulderboards ... would have been blank...but there is something there...
So its a cypher of some sort, so it's a unit that used a "lettered" cypher like LAH or DF etc... so you can probably eliminate the Viking ship tab for Wiking Div and the Estonian sword tab possibilities ...
Unless its a numbered Regimental cypher of course...which could have been used by such Foreign volunteer Divisions, but it looks too big for that scenario! It's most likely just SS in a weird wrinkled angle...
