Early SS Skull Hat Insignia? Is it real?

I would sincerely appreciate any opinions about this larger jawless skull insignia I just purchased with a number of other original WWII German items. The skull measures about 1 3/8" wide and appears to have some silver finish remaining on the reverse side. Is it original and is it an SS item? Thanks.

Looks like a fine original to me.

Be aware that your early skull was likely worn by the SS, but the same insignia was also worn by some Army regiments. No real way to tell, unless you find an RZM-marked early skull, which are scarce.
