I can`t help you with the markings or the brooch Capt.R

But I can show one I have in my collection. This is a brooch with provenance .
      In original box!

A gift given by Hauptsturmführer Siegfried Fehmer to a lady where large SS meetings were held. She was the wife of the owner of the place where these SS meetings were held! The place is still in the family today.

You can see 16 "Sig Runes" around the Sunwheel.

          Fantastic item with the box...!
I knew these 'Gahr -like' but not gahr items did not need to be made in Germany.
Now we know some were made in Oslo.
          Very interesting .

              beautiful sunwheel swastika brooch!

              Herr RK

Many thanks for posting your beautiful brooch. A true treasure in my opinion. Interesting to note that both of these brooches, as we confirmed, share almost the same exact diameter.

There appears to be lots of interesting stuff out there that still has not seen the light of day to the general public.

The one in post #1 is not a Gahr brooch, although i like it a lot. As Michael says it's hard to determine a period, although at first glance i'd say from before 45. The maker mark would reveal a lot if we knew what it was.

The brooch in post #12 as sold by HH is not original in my humble opinion.

The one posted by Reichskommissar is great too.

                  best regards,
                  Gaston

thanks Gaston, I know you are enjoying your vacation.

here is an interesting photo I found today. Shows an ss frau wearing what looks to be a civilian brooch. The center of which appears to be a round solid bezel. Possibly a mother's brooch of some kind? Any other photos like this out there?

                      Marks

Here is something I found in a 1922 dated German book of silversmith meistermarken.

Some of these marks are referred to as hausmarken and go back hundreds of years.

I have not been able to find an exact mark to match the one on my brooch but some of these are quite similar.

I need to find more of these silversmith mark books to find an exact match to my particular mark.

That´s not a brooch really but the right part of the closure for the stuff she is wearing.

                          possible answer?

When I looked at the cover of the Haag produced SS Leitheft I noticed the mark of the artist which looks almost identical to the mark on the back of my brooch.

This was NOT Hans Klocker, who illustrated the German issues and left his bind-rune mark in the same location on the German covers.

I cannot recall who this artist is. Anyone know? and anyone think he could be the designer of the brooch? The arrow is the same and the placement of the sigrune is identical in location as on the brooch mark. The only thing missing is the "A" looking rune under the arrow but above the "S" ( OR maybe, the "Arrow" actually IS the "A" in this bind-rune?)

                            Capt.,

I am a novice on brooches to say the least so I speak as humbly as possible -

Like you already know I have a couple of relevant publications relating to the subject.

I wouldn't say your piece is one made by the Gahr family. I am making such a statement based on the construction of your piece. I have seen a few real examples on a visit to Germany. For those who have seen them in the flesh the detail is precise, sharp, and quite complex (despite the simple design). You can tell a master smith has worked in their production. Gahr also embellished pieces (not all) with the branding, etc. too. Obviously a prototype would not have this.

That still does not answer your question, but, I wouldn't rule your brooch from being from the period (which is just as valuable in my eyes). Your best bet is to get a smith to identify the marking - then proceed with conclusions. Most silversmiths during the ages branded their pieces (especially European smiths). I am sure you already know this. But that is how I would proceed my friend.

Max Heiden, director at Heiden Goldsmiths & Jeweller in Munich, Germany would be a great person to ask about the mark. I have no idea how you would get into contact with him without visiting their Munich location (he does speak English).

came across this mark used during the TR. Thought it was interesting in comparison to the runic style marks used above.

                                Resurfacing....

Does anyone know the artist who used the above shown bindrune on the leitheft covers? I'm thinking that it is his mark on the back of the brooch.

Another recent theory is that this is an early Asmann mark with the A encircling the S. Did that firm use alternate or have an older mark?
