I'm going to hazard a guess but keep in mind I am a total amateur so better to wait for more experienced members.

Eagle looks good as far as I can tell.

Can't tell you about the pin. Not only because the pics are to blurry but because I know nothing of those things

The eagle is an original 'shrugging eagle' as found at the Dachau clothing works.

thanks ian; means a lot. it's what I'd thought. I like your 'shrugging eagle' descriptor.

after saying I wanted a clear pic of the marks and not getting one yet I asked if there was knurling on the pin. here's the pic of that and a little of the insignia if it helps thanks again.

I sort of like the green crud on the abzeichen and am feeling better about this item.

It's called 'verdigris' ... be careful as this now available as a paint/drip on extra on fake badges.

Does not need to have a knurled pin although most do, knurled pins do not mean original either. Now that photo makes it worse and you need to know if the markings are impressed or raised.

I did a macro on the pic and this is strange: note the letters on the mark (which now do seem raised) that 'bleed' into the guy's thumbnail !!

and, do any fakes have raised lettering? thanks again for all.
