    I looked closer at the close up picture of the rusty clip. This looks more and more like painted to me and not at all like black anodized and as we said aslo the rivets look bad.... Meanwhile I don't like it at all.

      can answer mine question

      the material of the covers
      were they made from the same material as tent quarters
      or was this also made of the same kind of material (thinner) as the smocks
      sigpicalways seeking = BEVO Cap and breast insignia

        In the earlier production years of SS camo, the material used to make smocks, covers, and Zeltbahnen was the high quality 'cotton duck'. However, by 1943 there was a dramatic shortage of cotton, and the W-SS began supplementing the production of camo items with poorer quality materials. Best, John

          Hey "dutch" John,

          what was it you don't you understand from my reply ???

          They made Covers/Smocks/Zeltbahnen/Combinations/Camo Hats from the same fabric. As Fred said they often (not always) used scraps from Zeltbahn/Smock production for smaller items like hats/covers.

          Early covers/smocks/Zeltbahnen etc. thicker and better quality materials later covers/smocks/Zeltbahnen etc. thinner and more and more lower quality materials.

          Examples:

          1 = SS VT Zeltbahn = higher quality / "thick" (heavy) meterial
          2 = SS Oak A/B from 44 = lower quality /thinn (light) material

          SS pre/early war cover like 1
          SS mid/late war cover like 2

          Same for the clips...they were of pretty low quality at the war's end....

              Just my thoughts Fritz. I have not seen black anodized clips with rust. The metal ones yes, but not the anodized ones.

                Many years ago I saw an Waffen-SS HBT smock... never thought they were so extremely rare. I still regret not buying it....

                  What the 'ell is this thing?

                  I picked this cap up in a lot of GI equipment at an antique mall about 13 years ago when a dealer was shutting down his booth. Don't worry, I'm not about to toot a horn regarding my bargain SS hat find. I suspect this is an early reenator repro or possibly an old film prop of some sort maybe. I was hoping some one here could pin it down for me.

                  The hat is constructed similarly to an SS camo hat, but the enormous bill is more the flavor of a tropical field cap. But there are no false turndowns like on the trops. The camo pattern, while similiar to the oakleafs in some regard, is not a match for any shown in Beaver's book. There is a top seam, a front seam and integral sweat band, but no vent grommets. Also, the material is non-reversible. The brown splotches shown in the interior shot are simply bleed through from the darker spots on the exterior. This make up of this hat is 100% cotton across all components and thread. The bill is stiffened with a very heavy burlap or hessian cloth material.

                    how come you guys don't read my comments ????

                    I said that the rust could come from the helmet it was on. But then the fabric needs to show rust stains too. Beside that you can easily remove the rust from the clips. And if the anodization is damaged there must be aluminum oxidation due to electrolysis. The clips look like aluminium clips...though like faked aluminum clips from these pics. They appear to be painted which is incorrect.

                    I agree and never said something else: I never heard of anodized or painted steel clips....

                    In my eyes the cover is bad .

                      that cap looks as if not authentic. Can you post a pic of the "inside"? I am just curious...

                      As you said the pattern is also "a little bit" strange. There are however chances to find prototype patterns and items. But I don't believe this is the case with this one here.
