    SS helmet cover

Today a fellow collector showed me some stuff he traded. Here is his SS helmet cover. The material is original IMO, but the construction gives me some worries. The rivets on the hooks are too big and the construction of the flap differs. The hooks show some rust and that worries me too... Any opinions?

The helmet under the first SS cover had a SS decal and this suspicious looking chinstrap.....

                      Hi,
from the pics it looks as if the rivets vary pretty much in diameter. The rivet that holds the one with rust in place is bigger than the one that holds the other clip. It could be possible to find some rust on the clip that came from the helmet it was on but than the helmet needs to be rusty (if bought as "pair since 45") and than the fabric of course must show rust stains too. I can't see any . Do you have a chance to picture some area of the springs and more of the atumn side? Look under the loops, is the color fresh there or does it show the same shades? Also the front flap, as you said, looks a little low quality. But hat does not worry me the most. From the pics it is hard to say if authentic or not- but looks a bit like made from a Zeltbahn and found clips....Good qualtity helmet cover fakes are hard to detect, especialy by using pictures.

Hi Fritz, unfortunately I have no more pictures... I took some asap for my own research. This cover is not mine, but I am not comfortable with it.

                          re

Heeey Fred and Fritz, maybe a stupid qeustion
But these things are defently not my cup of thea

I understand that the smocks (oak-leave,bludderd edge etc etc0
where always made from much thinner material than the zeltbahn quarters

Is this also with the helmet-covers

Hi John, not to my knowledge. I think the covers were made from surplous material...

                              John,
Fred is right, they used the same fabric but it became thinner and more and more artificial fibres were ued for making material ( but still a high cotton % remained )during the war as a result of supply problems. There are smocks made of HBT which are believed to be authentic but there is no known authentic ss Zeltbahn, Helmetcover or camo cap made from HBT fabric.

                              Fred,
from the pics ( which don't show that much, especially autumn side is not shown) I don't like it that much...So I agree with your concerns.

                              Fritz
